Why are young couples enthusiastic about prenups?

On Behalf of | Jan 7, 2020 | prenuptial agreements

In Indiana, prenuptial agreements have had a bit of a bad reputation for some time. But young couples embrace prenups with more enthusiasm than ever before. Today we will examine why that may be the case.

First of all, younger couples have more assets to protect. Studies have shown that the average age people get married at has risen. Between 2013 and 2016, the average age has jumped 3 to 5 years. In addition, young couples are waiting longer to get married after they begin dating. In fact, the average period of dating before marriage is now almost 5 years. In this time, young people are busy working and building their careers. They have a lot more to lose if they get divorced, and thus have a bigger incentive to protect their property.

Second, many young couples may have been children of divorce themselves. Some studies estimate that up to a third of Millennials had divorced parents. Many of them saw firsthand what sort of financial devastation a divorce could bring. Because of their experiences, they are more likely to view marriage as the legal process it is. Sure, marriage is still symbolic and important for many. But they do not let this blind them from the reality that it is a legal situation. They also accept that divorce comes with legal consequences. They do not deny that they may one day face a divorce themselves. This is a realistic mindset rather than pessimistic.
