Death is difficult to talk about, but JADE, the Jewish Association for Death Education, exists to make those conversations a little easier. Founded By Susan Kramer and David Zimmer in 2023, JADE’s mission is to guide Jewish individuals and families through dying, death, mourning, grief, and even discussions about the afterlife by providing education, resources, and support. JADE stages workshops around the country led by community-based rabbis, funeral directors, death doulas, and hospice workers. “Talking about death won’t kill you, and it might help” is the mantra.
As Indiana estate planning attorneys, we know it does help – a lot.. By planning ahead, you take control of your future care and protect those who may need to speak on your behalf. You have the right to prepare and Indiana Funeral Planning Directive, which specifically allows you to choose the specifics of your funeral and burial wishes and appoint a representative to carry out those directives. You may also prepare an Advance Directive for Health Care, which not only allows you to appoint someone to make medical decisions on your behalf, your health care representative, but provides the individual with authority to handle your funeral wishes in the absence of an appointee under a Funeral Planning Directive.
No, death is not an easy topic to discuss and is very scary to many.. It’s a subject that is not part of normal conversation. But, as Lynn Keegan and Carole Ann Drick say in their book The Golden Room: a Practical Guide for Death with Dignity, “with proper preparation everything will fall into place in the most kind and gentle manner as possible.”
